The Kaiviti Silktails fell short of glory on Saturday as they lost to Mounties 21-20 at Mascot Oval in Sydney, Australia.
After a fairly even opening, Mounties led the scoring in the 9th minute as second rower Kane McQuiggin crashed over for a try down the left edge.
The Silktails answered back, as left wing Josua Waqavesi raced away to level the scores at 4-4 in the 17th minute.
McQuiggin again forced his way over for his second try to put Mounties back on top 8-4 at half time.
The second half was barely underway when Silktails right wing Vuate Karawalevu levelled the scores again grabbing a cut out pass and waltzing in for a try in the corner.
Their opponents answered back just four minutes later as Cleveland McGhie reached over after a well-worked attacking set. McGhie crossed again in the 52nd minute.
That try became the first of the afternoon to be converted, as Mounties jumped out to an 18-8 lead.
Fullback Ropate Tobe scored for the Silktails to narrow the margin to 18-14 and with 16 minutes left Karawalevu scored again which was converted by Waisale Nayavucere, to give them a 20-18 lead.
A penalty to the Mounties saw them level scores 20-all.
Moments later Mounties captain Harry Leddy stepped up and calmly landed a field goal to hand his side the narrowest of victories.
