THE Sigatoka Young Boys team took out top honours in the Cuvu Collegian Rugby 7s Festival under-17 competition at Lawaqa Park yesterday.

The players last played together while at primary school and at the national Milo Kaji Rugby competition.

They reunited early this week for training for the tournament.

Their 15-5 win also sealed its unbeaten run in the past two days.

Head coach Ratu Meli Kurisaru Jr said team combination and the hunger to win enabled the players to do well.

He said the players had been playing for their respective high school teams, but returned to the village to team up for the competition.

Kurisaru said the boys marched into camp at Sigatoka Village on Sunday and trained for a few days.

“These boys are all from Sigatoka Village and they last played together during the primary school days for the Milo Kaji,” he said.

“Even though they have attended different high schools, they still have the combination which contributed to the win.

“More importantly it was their sheer guts that inspired these boys to win.”

Kurisaru said the competition brought the best from his boys.

He said the players needed more exposure to showcase their talents. Meanwhile, Ratu Filise won the bowl final while Kesenavunuvalu humbled Togobula to win the plate title.

The tournament continues today.

U17 results:

Bowl final: Ratu Filise 12-Naboutini 7,

Plate final: Kesenavunivalu 21 – Togobula 5,

Cup; Sigatoka Young Boys 15 -Momi Tigers 5.
