SHOPPERS and members of the public had to evacuate the MHCC building in Suva earlier this evening when a fire broke out at the popular meeting point in the capital city.

Smoke billowed from the ground floor of the building which houses the supermarket and other business outlets.

More than 20 fire officers from the National Fire Authority, including police officers are now trying to stop the fire from spreading.

According to eye witnesses present at the building during the time of the incident, they believed the fire started from level one of the building.

They said hundreds of people had to rush out of the building for their safety after the alarm went off.

Bulou Lutumailagi, 30, said she was having a meal with her daughter on the third floor of the building when the incident happened.

“When I heard the alarm, I just grabbed my daughter and ran down the escalator because she was crying too,” Ms Lutumailagi said.

“I thought the building was going to collapse but when I got out, I found that there was fire breaking out from level one,” she said.
