Shipping company looks to provide water taxis

GOUNDAR Shipping is looking at providing ferry services from Suva Harbour to Nausori.

In an interview with the company’s managing director, George Goundar, at his office in Suva today, he said he had planned this over the past six years.

With the traffic congestion along the Suva-Nausori corridor, he said it was time that other alternatives were provided to make travelling faster.

“During peak hours, it takes me more than two and a half hours to travel from Suva to Nausori Airport,” Mr Goundar said.

“We need to start thinking outside the box because the Government uses millions of dollars every year to maintain our roads.

“If this can happen overseas then I believe we can also do it here in Fiji.

“People will be able to reach Nausori within 20 minutes with the ferry services. I have already seen the ferry and it can carry a total of 200 passengers.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Roads Authority CEO Jonathan Moore would respond on this issue soon.
