SENIOR Fiji Labour Party member and former senator Sachida Nand Sharma has been elected acting president of the party, succeeding the late Lavinia Padarath.

In a press statement released yesterday, FLP leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry said Mr Sharma’s appointment was made unanimously at the party’s management board meeting in
Lautoka on Saturday.

Mr Sharma also holds the post of acting national treasurer.

“Substantive appointments will be made at FLP’s Annual Delegates Conference in November,” Mr Chaudhry said.

He said Mr Sharma was a wellknown retired Suva businessman and brought with him a wealth of political experience to the post.

“He has been a staunch party activist since 1992 and has served on the FLP executive board as vice-president for over a decade.

“Sachida Sharma has also been a long serving elected Suva City Councillor for some 20 years, almost 10 of which were as a Labour councillor.”

Mrs Padarath passed away on July 14 after a short illness.

She was one of the founding members of the FLP and served as Minister for Women, Culture and Social Welfare in the 1999- 2000 Labour government and was appointed a senator in the Upper House in 2006.

Mrs Padarath was appointed party president in 2011 after the death of former president Jokapeci Koroi.
