Sharing processes in a respectful and authentic way is one of the mediums of exchange being done at a cross cultural and knowledge exchange by the Te Atinga Contemporary Maori Arts Committee from New Zealand and The Fiji Museum.

The week-long activity is held at The Fiji Museum Verandah in Suva.

Artists from Fiji and New Zealand continued the work they initially started on Thursday with the form of art making in their traditional and specialised ways.

“The print makers today, we are continuing to share our different approaches with Igatolo Tokase, who is a well-known print maker in Fiji and whoever else wants to come in and share that with us,” Vanessa Edwards, a representative of the arts committee said.

“We are going to look at having a go at applying the masi designs to ceramic pieces using Igatolo’s ink and seeing how that goes.”

She said this visit allowed her and other artists to share knowledge and information.

Ms Edwards also shared a significance between the various forms of ink used for printing in her community and by Igatolo Tokase.

“The difference is we do not make our own ink, we buy it. “So what’s refreshing here is seeing Igatolo’s Ink and then starting to think how I can make my own ink when I go home.”

This opportunity has also allowed Ms Edwards to think and evaluate new ways of using bark.

“So the thing that’s changed my perspective from here, I will look at bark different and start to research and investigate what we can use at home to emulate what Igatolo does here in terms of making her ink.”
