FIJI’S permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva Nazhat Shameem Khan says the presence of least developing countries and Small Island States in the Human Rights Council in Geneva opens the window of opportunity to fight for issues that matters most to them.
While addressing participants at the LDCs/SIDS Trust Fund Regional Workshop in Nadi today, Mrs Khan said such was the significance of the trust fund.
“It opens the window of opportunity for us to be there to say what we must say and to advocate for the protection of human rights in the context of our development journeys,” she said.
“These journeys are not identical in any two countries.
“However, our experiences with climate change, migration, cultural autonomy, faith-based practices, and poverty reduction often show similar patterns.”
The objective of the three-day workshop is to assess the contribution of the trust fund in building the capacity of LDCs/SIDS for the promotion and protection of human rights and to provide the opportunity for States to benefit from sharing and learning from each other’s expertise and experiences.
