THERE has been a need to focus more on the needs of victims within the criminal justice system, particularly child sexual assault victims, says the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Christopher Pryde.

In a statement released yesterday, Mr Pryde revealed that as part of a major restructure within the Office of the Director
of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), a new sexual crimes division to replace child protection division of the ODPP had been created.

Mr Pryde said a victim and witness assistance unit had also been established to provide greater support to victims and vulnerable prosecution witnesses.

He said in recognition of the need to focus more resources into resolving the difficulties faced in prosecuting child sexual offences, the DPP had also issued guidelines on prosecuting child sexual abuse cases and other crimes against children which would come into effect from next month.
