Some women market vendors are victims of domestic violence at home and even inside the market from jealous husbands.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali shared this with Namaka market vendors during Market Vendors Day celebrations in Nadi this week.

She said over the years, the FWCC had received complaints of sexual harassment and sexism against women vendors from markets around Fiji.

“We would suggest a strong support network amongst you and we could support that,” she said.

Ms Ali commended the joint effort of police officers and market vendors associations in ensuring a safe and secure market space.

She said the Nadi Women’s Crisis Centre would be happy to be part of the partnership.

“FWCC’s work is about promoting and protecting women’s and girls’ and human rights.

“We work to respond to and prevent all forms of violence against women, girls and children.

“We also lobby for law and policy changes that work to better women’s lives.”
