Disaster Management Minister Inia Seruiratu says people should be looking at the ingenuity of Fiji Police Force and National Fire Authority officers in using a cut out water tank to conduct rescue and other work at the height of the flooding in Rakiraki.

He was responding to comments made by Rakiraki Chamber of Commerce president George Shiu Raj that boats should have been provided to NFA and police to enable them to conduct rescue work during flood events.

Mr Seruiratu said instead of waiting around, the NFA and police officers took the initiative and got stuck into their rescue efforts.

“On the Rakiraki rescue, first we must appreciate the use of common sense and improvisation by those involved in order to save the lives of those needing assistance,” the minister said.

“On equipment, the Fiji Police Force unfortunately have not delivered the boats for Rakiraki and Tavua respectively but it should be there by Friday (today) this week.”
