SEVENTY-FOUR new Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) recruits have been urged to become good role models for those under their care.

These were the sentiments from Minister for Defence Inia Seruiratu at the FCS passing-out parade where he also lauded eight female corrections officers, reminding them of their core role in rehabilitating former inmates to become law-abiding citizens.

Mr Seruiratu said the successful reintegration of offenders into the community was the best security for any society.

He said the real test of the recruits’ competency would happen when assigned to the various correctional facilities.

“However, these were all conducted in a controlled environment and the real test of your competency is when you are assigned to the various correctional facilities in Fiji where you as officers will front up to inmates and whether you are man enough to work within the confinement of our prison,” he said.
