THE Fiji Police Force plays an important role in creating an investor-friendly environment in Fiji, said Defence and National Security Minister Inia Seruiratu in Parliament yesterday.

Speaking on the 2019-2020 National Budget, he said the Force had been allocated $800,000 to enhance the necessary capabilities for enforcers.

“We can’t bring in foreign investors if we are robbing people at knifepoint, this is why it is important to strengthen police,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He said there was a need to rope in foreign investors so our economy could prosper.

The capability of the maritime police unit was also important, he said, with an allocation of $727,000 for the acquisition of new patrol boats.

“These boats will complement existing efforts of our two new navy vessels in the surveillance of our EEZ.

“In order for Fiji to enjoy its unprecedented levels of economic growth, the provision of a safe, secure and stable environment for development is a necessary precondition needed to attract investment for development and increase opportunities for prosperity.”
