Serevi to launch fund for children

FORMER Fiji sevens captain and skipper Waisale Serevi will launch an education fund for students in Fiji soon.

Serevi held the global launch of his biography in Hong Kong, the place which catapulted him to be a world icon in sevens rugby.

The sevens maestro said one of the main reasons of his book was to raise funds for his education project.

“I am creating a Serevi school fund in the USA and in Fij,’ he said after the launch of his book in Hong Kong yesterday.

“I want to give back and help high school students in Fiji and get them into college.

Serevi said he was in discussions with the University of the South Pacific and ideally he would like to start his scholarship program from next year.

“It gives me time to get on with this project and create the funds.

“A lot of people suffered from the recent cyclones and floods and I know a lot of people want to send their children to universities

“I’ve been giving back to rugby all this time but now I want to do a new thing,”” Serevi said.

“I have created history for Fijian rugby players by writing this book but this time I want to give kids in Fiji the chance to go to school because there is also opportunity there for them.

“Kids may see Serevi and associate him with all the good things, but we all cannot be rugby players, we all cannot be teachers and lawyers.

“You have your talent, make sure you know what you’re good at and like I did in1984 when I failed my Fiji Junior exam at Lelean Memorial School I decided I wanted to be a rugby player and I pursued it 100 miles an hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Serevi said.
