The Jamaica national 7s team will be the surprise package at this weekends HSBC Vancouver 7s as they have one of the best in the game of sevens helping them in their preparations.
Former Fiji 7s captain Waisale Serevi has been helping the Jamaica men’s team as they prepare to make their debut in the World Rugby Sevens Series.
When asked if he was helping Jamaica in training, the maestro replied, he was.
“Yes I have been training the Jamaican team prepare for the Vancouver 7s,” he said.
Jamaica men’s sevens captain Conan Osbourne said they were all looking forward to the tournament.
“We are super excited and happy being given this opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the World Series which is a great honour,” Osbourne said. He added their road to the sevens series has been a big challenge for them.
“This tournament is a challenge and will test ourselves before we go back to our region and try to win all those tournaments.
“The team is really working hard, we have young players coming through and island players based in the US so we keep finding these young players.”
Meanwhile our Fiji men’s and women’s 7s teams will not be taking part in both 7s tournaments.
FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said the Fiji Rugby Union had advised World Rugby that both the Fiji men’s and the Fijiana 7s teams had been away from their families in their own bubbles for over five months during their preparation leading to the Olympic Games campaign and they wanted to give them time with their families.
