The 2022 Digicel Senior League football competition kicks off tomorrow with a change in format.

With Nasinu and Tailevu Naitasiri gaining promotion this season, only four teams will take part in the Viti Levu Zone while six teams will feature in the Vanua Levu Zone.

Lami, Northland Tailevu, Rakiraki and Tavua will kick-start the season tomorrow.

Fiji FA competitions manager Amitesh Pal said there was a new format to the competition this year.

“The four teams in Viti Levu will play three round-robin matches each. That means each team will play nine games. Then the top two from each zone which feature in a double round-robin to determine the winner of the senior division, ” Pal said.

The winner of the senior division will gain automatic promotion to the top division while the bottom placed team in the Digicel Premier League will be relegated. Pal said he expected a much tougher competition in the senior division this year.

“Unlike previous years the promotion is automatic and teams know they just need to finish top in the senior division to get promoted. This will give them a great opportunity to fulfil their dreams of gaining promotion.”

In matches tomorrow, Lami will host Rakiraki at 2pm at the Fiji FA Academy Ground in Suva while Northland Tailevu battles Tavua at the Uprising Sports Complex in Pacific Harbour at 1pm.

The Vanua Levu Zone will begin at a later date.
