Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says Fiji’s selection as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a victory for the basic rights of all climate vulnerable people.
Mr Bainimarama said the Fijian Government’s fundamental assurance of equality for all Fijians placed human rights at the heart of our national development, leading to rapid progress at instituting rights-based protections and our historic position as the first Pacific Island member of the UNHRC.
“Our leadership of the council comes at a critical time for humanity, as the climate emergency threatens human rights on a global and generational scale,” he said.
“Ambassador Khan is well suited to help steer our global community towards a future of justice, decency and dignity for all peoples.”
The President of UNHRC and the permanent representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office, ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan has reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to ensuring the protection of human rights globally amid growing challenges that threaten the human rights of all peoples and persons.
Ambassador Khan presided over her first session as President of the Human Rights Council on Tuesday at the commencement of the 37th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) with the review of the Federated States of Micronesia.
