All low-lying coastal areas of Fiji have been warned of possible tsunami waves following a major 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand this morning.

In the tsunami advisory forecast issued this morning, the Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department stated that the tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1m above the tide level were possible for the Antartica, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kosrae, Mexico, Nauru, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Pitcairn Islands, Pohnpei, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Wallis and Futuna.

The unit stated that it would continue to monitor the situation.

In its earlier advisory, the Seismology section had stated that tsunami waves from that earthquake were possible within the next three hours along some coasts of Kermadec Islands, Tonga, NZ, Niue, American Samoa, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, Cook Islands, Tokelau, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The earthquake at Kermadec Is is the second seismic activity recorded in New Zealand this morning, with the first one – a 7.3 mag earthquake – recorded 73km Southeast from Raoul Island at 5.41am.
