PERMANENT Secretary for Forestry Pene Baleinabuli today opened the second round of consultations with REDD+ stakeholders on Fiji’s draft Emissions Reduction Program Document (ERPD).

The Emissions Reduction Program (ERP) proposes to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) under the World Bank of Fiji’s effort to combat climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) from the atmosphere at the rate of 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 5 years.

“The proposal commits about 90 per cent of Fiji’s land mass and includes Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni,” Mr Baleinabuli said.

“It simply means that Fiji is offering to offset greenhouse gas emissions from developed countries through interventions like forest conservation, afforestation, reforestation, sustainable forest management and climate smart agriculture.”

Attended by various stakeholders who partner in these critical interventions which continues to be the driving force behind the major goal of the program- the development of climate resilient communities and sustainable livelihood options for forest resource owners.

“We must all make sure that we contribute to this exercise to the best of our ability so we can meet our deadlines but more importantly meet the expectations of the Carbon Fund in June this year,” Mr Baleinabuli said.

The Ministry of Forestry continues to explore ways to further advance the Government’s commitment towards reducing global carbon emissions through a programme – Fiji’s Emissions Reduction Program.
