MEMBERS of the public assisted police yesterday as they combed the Qawa River for a 40-year-old Taveuni man who fell in the river after two boats collided over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the man, Devesi Vosadrau, who was in one of the fibreglass boats, fell overboard after the collision.
Ms Naisoro said the incident happened along the Qawa River at 2.40pm on Sunday afternoon.
“It is alleged that one of the fibreglass boats was operated by a 15-year-old student of Cawaira outside Labasa Town,” she said.
“The student was ferrying seven passengers while heading from Cawaira towards Vulovi.
“Upon reaching a bend near the Fiji Sugar Corporation Mill, the student lost control of the vessel’s speed.
“In doing so, he collided with the oncoming fibreglass boat which was carrying four passengers.”
Ms Naisoro said two passengers sustained injuries and were admitted at the Labasa Hospital.
She said a search party consisted of police and members of the National Fire Authority in Labasa combed the river on Sunday.
However, the operation was called off in the evening.
The search and rescue party, she said, resumed yesterday.
Police investigations continue.
