Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube says it has been a challenge trying to get Fijians of Indian descent to join their lineup for the 2022 General Election.

The former Reserve Bank of Fiji governor said they were conducting community and village visitations as they prepared for the upcoming polls.

“We want more representation from Fijians of Indian descent,” Mr Narube said.

“But this is currently low and we are looking to lifting the numbers.

“It’s basically head hunting and trying to talk directly to interested people to come and join us.

“We have four people so far who have shown an interest in joining us.

“We are hoping to attract about 15 per cent of Fijians of Indian descent.”

Mr Narube said they would announce the final list of candidates by the end of the month.

“The board has approved 50 candidates, but we intend to fill the 55 seats.

“I am very pleased, particularly with the number of women joining our party, they are lawyers and community workers.

“We want to fill about 30 per cent as women candidates.”
