A SEAFOOD company raided last week after reports of alleged illegal fishing in Labasa is being investigated.
Ministry of Fisheries confirmed that the raid was conducted after it received information about the alleged activities.
“The ministry confirms receiving information on a case of alleged illegal fishing occurring in the Northern Division.
“We can also confirm at this time, that there is ongoing inquiries and investigations to verify this alleged information.
“However, the ministry is unable to provide any specific information at this time as the investigations are still ongoing.”
The ministry has reiterated that anyone found deliberately violating any fisheries laws would be prosecuted.
“The penalties for any breaches are significant with instant fines of $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for corporations.”
Maximum penalties are fines of up to $50,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for corporations.
