THE Fiji National University (FNU), Engineering & Science Fair provided best friends Milinia Drau and Ana Tavo an opportunity to explore and understand the wide range of career pathways available after graduation.

The Nabua Secondary School students were part of a strong turnout of students that attended the two-day event organised by FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST), at Derrick Campus in Samabula.

The event provided a platform for visitors, especially secondary school students, to interact with academic professionals, university students on career pathways as well as review student projects and participate in fun educational activities – which provided students with a greater understanding of study programs offered at the university.

For Drau and Tavo, it was an interesting experience because they participated in various activities while searching for a perfect career option before their final exams.

“I want to become a doctor. However, if for some reason I am not able to fulfil this dream, I want to pursue something that will give me equal satisfaction as having a dream to enter the medical profession,” said Drau.

“After touring the booths and having looked at the student displays, I am convinced that my second option will be biology and chemistry.”

The Year 13 student said the models such as the ginger factory and DNA caught her attention, which made her realise the importance of sustainable food production practices as well.

“In the world where we constantly face issues such as food security, I feel the work done by biologists is extremely important,” Drau was quoted saying in a statement from the FNU.

Similar sentiments were shared by Tavo.

“I am grateful to have attended this event. For us science students, it really broadens our knowledge of the industries out there in the workforce. The decision of choosing science has proved positive for me, giving me an abundance of career options to choose from,” she said.
