STUDENTS from eight primary schools in Suva and Navua participated in a Science Challenge designed to boost interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Officiating at the inaugural event this week at the Vodafone Arena, Education Minister Rosy Akbar said STEM was one way Government hoped to entice students to take up courses that would address our skills shortage and promote study to work in job-ready areas.

“The challenge aims to inspire students to consider a future career in science and engineering by choosing to study subjects such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering in Secondary School,” she said.

Ms Akbar added that there was a refocus on how interest in STEM could be generated to all students.

“We are relooking at careers counselling and awareness.

“We want to provide more opportunities for girls in STEM education.

“School leaders have a strong role to play in enforcing the paradigm shift and changing the outlook and approach towards STEM classes in general.”

She said during the challenge, students would be exposed to aspects of science and engineering not usually found in their school environment.

“Students will experience that science and engineering involves creativity, innovation, problem solving and team work.”

The schools under the pilot program are Marist Brothers Primary, Nehru Primary, Gospel Primary, Suva Primary, Suva Muslim, Vashist Muni Primary, Rampur Primary and Rishikul Primary.
