Schools remain closed

SCHOOLS in Labasa will remain closed until further notice.
Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said the decision to continue with the closure stemmed from the fact that there was no water supply in these schools.
Mr Vocea said the schools would open after the restoration of water supply.
“We are calling on parents to take good care of their children considering the adverse weather we are facing,” he said. Police will be stationed in the Labasa Town area to ensure that children do not loiter.
“I am also advising parents outside the Labasa area to use sound judgement when sending their children to schools which would remain open tomorrow (today).
“At the moment four schools in Labasa have been converted to evacuation centres.”
Mr Vocea also revealed that Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s trip to the North scheduled to begin today had been cancelled.
Mr Vocea said this was because of the fact that all shipping companies in the North had been ordered to stop operations until the weather improved.
“We do not want a repeat of the shipping incident that we encountered recently,” said Mr Vocea.
He also confirmed that so far, 10 evacuation centres remained active in the Labasa area, adding that they were yet to confirm the number of evacuees as it continued to fluctuate.
