Schools open in Wainibuka

THE education ministry is strengthening its capacity to improve disaster preparedness and response strategies, says Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar.

She highlighted this while officiating at the opening of Wainibuka Primary and Secondary School  today.

She said the cost of this rehabilitation work was $1.85 million.

For Wainibuka District Primary School, a sum of $880,000 was used to rehabilitate 13 buildings and this included the staff quarters, school block and also a new classroom was constructed.

A total of $971,536 was used to upgrade Wainibuka Secondary School. Twenty-eight buildings in the school were upgraded and two new classroom were also constructed.

Ms Akbar said the  project was completed one year after Tropical Cyclone Winston ravaged the school buildings.

The minister said the ministry was now carrying out an infrastructure audit of all schools, reviewing the school maintenance handbook, reviewing the Education in Emergency(EiE) policy and was also adopting the build back better principle for all future construction.
