The 2018 Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship ended on a high note last week at the FMF Gymnasium in Laucala Bay, Suva seeing new winners and teams making their debut.

Fiji secondary rugby champion Ratu Kadavulevu School made their debut and Yat Sen Secondary School won the title after nine years.

The historic victory for Yat Sen Secondary Under 19 boys basketball team has not only etched their names in the school competition but forever in the school’s history book.

The school that once reigned as king in the sport, and failed to do so for the past nine years, made a comeback, defeating Marist in a head to head battle, winning 16 over 13 point.

Yat Sen Secondary School men’s team head coach Earl Hughes said the players were extremely happy after defending the title. The boys did very well and they have been trying to win for quite a while,” said Mr Hughes.

Mr Hughes said they will start their preparation early next year by getting them together and to play outside.

Ratu Kadavulevu School fielded three teams to compete in the three day championship.

Under-15 team manager, Asenaca Raloka said the principal wanted to see if they could try out other sports, as the school’s main focus was always on rugby and athletics.

Ms Raloka said it will take time for the boys from Lodoni to develop their skills in the game. This tournament has been an eye opener for the boys, especially those who have never played basketball before.
