The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League Association expects its competition to get stronger next year. This is because of the improvement in the preliminary rounds in the past few weeks before the grand finals this weekend.

The 2021 Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League National Finals will be played at the ANZ Stadium in Suva this Saturday.

FSSRLA president Akuila Vute said they planned to develop the sport in the rural areas. Vute said they wanted more smaller schools to take up rugby league.

“What we are actually doing now is developing as many talents as possible from the schools that don’t normally participate in the Deans Trophy competition,” Vute said. “We had Tavua District School reach the national semi-finals in the under-15 grade.

“So next year, we expect more of those smaller schools to step up and be able to make it to the national finals.

“Come next year I assure our partners and our rugby league public in Fiji that rugby league is going to get better and better.”
