Schools close, civil servants await notice

Schools will remain closed today and tomorrow while all civil servants have been advised to work from home until further notice.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka said several roads, bridges, and crossings are inaccessible and more flooding was forecasted as tropical depression TD02F intensified to a category one tropical cyclone between 6pm to 9pm last night, and further intensified to category two by this morning.

He said the decision was made after discussions with the Fiji Met Service yesterday.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has also been closely liaising with the Ministry of Civil Service and the Ministry of Education in terms of the resumption of duties for civil servants and schools and a review will be made. A review of the decision will be made tomorrow afternoon.

For sea transportation, Mr Ditoka said in consultation with the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), all sea transport would cease operation from today.

He said as of midday yesterday, NDMO had activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and the divisional EOCs with teams diligently monitoring ground reports.

“We have received reports of flooding across the four divisions. I can confirm at this moment that one evacuation centre is open in Yasawa,” he said.

Mr Ditoka advised members of the public to take the necessary steps to safeguard their homes and families during the current weather situation.

“Early preparation plays a pivotal role in minimising the potential impacts on human lives and property.

“When individuals and communities are well prepared, they can respond more effectively during critical moments.

“Store enough food and water, charge electronic devices, secure your homes, and trim overhanging branches – have a disaster plan and know your nearest evacuation centre.

“Look out for members of vulnerable groups within your community for assistance and support during the preparation process to ensure their safety.”
