Salauca tipped to win qualifying rounds in Suva

THE Coretech Fiji and Touchwood Investments Club championships qualifying rounds kicked off yesterday at the Fiji Golf Club course in Vatuwaqa with Jone Salauca tipped as the favourite to win.

The two day meet organised by Vijay Singh more commonly known in the local golf scene as VK Singh said while they noted absence of defending champion Olaf Allen, they looked forward to stiff competition as more than 100 players competed today. Eight players from the respective grades, A, B and C will qualify for the East team that will face off against the western qualifiers late next month.

“The weather is fine so we expect them to play well and front some good golf. Olaf is not with us because he is participating at the Pacific Games but he has automatic qualification to the next round, so it will be exciting to see who joins him,” he said.

At the end of the first day Salauca leads with 2 under par from 70. Salauca edges Vijay Goundar by three strokes and VK Singh carded 74 to place 3rd. Competition continues today with the top eight players to be named in the East team to be determined.
