THE Catholic Church’s Annual Lenten Appeal will go towards building a safe-house for women who are victims of domestic violence.

This, according to the Women’s Ministry Caritas Fiji coordinator Sister Mariana Tevurega.

She said head of the Catholic Church Archbishop Peter Loy Chong had called on members to support the women’s intention during the Lenten period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

She made the comment in a statement released in celebration of International Women’s Day.

“This year’s International Women’s Day 2020 campaign theme is Each for Equal,” she said.

“The Catholic Church through the bible and Catholic Social Teaching fully supports the International Women’s Day 2020 theme.

“The Church teaches gender equality, believing in the worth and dignity of women.

“Sister Tevurega said Catholic Social Teaching in regard to ‘Dignity of the Human Person’ stated that human life was sacred and the dignity of all persons was vital.

She said this principle was grounded in the idea that every person was made in the image of God and was the clearest reflection of God among us.

“Every form of social or cultural discrimination in fundamental personal rights on the grounds of sex, race, colour, social conditions, language, or religion must be curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God’s design.

“Access to employment and to professions must be open to all without unjust discrimination – men and women, healthy and disabled, natives and immigrants.

“For its part society should, according to circumstances, help citizens find work and employment.

“Sister Tevurega said IWD was a day to celebrate the achievements of all our women past, present and future and to call for a collective action to accelerate gender equality.

“By this we stand together and say no to inequality, harassment, discrimination, domestic violence and all types of oppression encountered by women in our local communities and homes.”
