The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) received much needed support for the Rugby League World Cup campaign yesterday.

The Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC), in partnership with Government, gave $500,000 to the FNRL at the FNSC boardroom at Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.

FNSC executive chairman Peter Mazey said they were glad to assist the FNRL.

“We are glad to assist and we hope to give a lot more in the future,” said Mazey.

“It is never enough, but regrettably the country has been through hard times with COVID. Rugby league is one of those interesting sports that everyone forgets, but they are higher in the world rankings than any other team. We are always proud of their efforts especially at the world cup level. I think a large majority of our professional athletes playing overseas are in rugby league. That just shows how good our players are and I would not want to be a selector choosing the final squad.”

FNRL chairman Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto was grateful for the support shown towards FNRL and the Fiji Bati.

“On behalf of the FNRL, I thank the FNSC and Government for the support,” said Naupoto.

“It is a very big contribution towards our participation at the Rugby League World Cup. We have been reaching the semi-finals and we are looking to go one step further this year.  This funding will surely allow us to continue and finish the preparations we have been doing as we get ready for the June Test against the PNG Kumuls on the 25th of this month. It is an interesting World Cup campaign as our first game is against the reigning champions, Australia.”

Fiji Bati head coach Joe Rabele will announce his final squad for the Rugby League World Cup in the United Kingdom after the Test match against the Kumuls.

The former Fiji Bati forward will today name a 30-member squad to face the Kumals.
