FROM January to date a total of 65 Fijians have lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents.

Accidents Compensation Commission of Fiji’s chief executive officer Parvez Akbar said safety of people on roads whether they were vehicle operators or pedestrians were equally important.

“We can never over emphasise the importance of road safety,” he said.

“Road safety is not just a matter for various entities.

“We should all take responsibility for ensuring that we look after the safety of others as well as ourselves.

“It is also important that we educate our children about road safety, and the risks and hazards on the road.”

Mr Akbar said since the festive season has arrived they were urging everyone to enjoy this period responsibly so that all road users returned to their families safe and sound.

He was speaking while handing over compensation cheques to families of road accident victims in the Northern Division.
