FIVE to ten per cent of breast cancers are hereditary in nature.

This was revealed by Dr Siva Selvam of the MIOT Pacific Hospitals during the Continuing Medical Education seminar held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva today.

Dr Selvam said the risks of suffering from breast cancer increased when a woman became older.

“When the mother, sister and daughter has breast cancer this increases the risks as well,” Dr Selvam said.

Dr Selvam adds not all screening tests used for breast cancer were helpful.
