FIJI cricket head coach Josefa Rika will be coaching the International Cricket Council East Asia Pacific team to the 2018 Australia Country Cricket Championship to be played in western Australia in January next year.
“It is always an honour getting involved in the EAP side at any capacity and to be selected as a coach is and has been a goal for me for a long time, not just for the region but most importantly for Fiji,” Rika said in a press release.
Vanautu coach Shane Deitz will also assist Rika with the team.
“Also selected from Fiji is middle order batsman, Makutu Seru who will be making his debut for the EAP team that is packed with Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea players for the week-long event,” the press release read.
“Rika, who is one of a few level 3 Cricket Australia Accredited coaches in the region, will return for his 3rd Country Championship and hopes his side can continue from their strong performance in last year’s tournament.
“Seru had a stellar tournament at the recently completed ICC EAP Tournament in Bendigo and has justified his selection after finishing at an average of 28 and being selected as batsman of the tournament with consistent performances for the national side.
“This caps off a good year for Seru who also played a major role in the champion Moce side at this year’s Easter tournament and captaining Moce to last week’s final against Lakeba at the 2017 Invitational Tournament at Suva’s Albert Park.”
The event is scheduled for January 7-13 while Rika and Seru depart for Perth on January 5.
