REPUBLIC of Fiji Military Forces chief of staff Brigadier General Jone Kalouniwai confirmed they are awaiting an order from the Navy commander for the convening of a court martial against the officers on board the MV Kiro.
The naval vessel ran aground at Cakauyawa Reef near Makuluva island, about 10 kilometres off Suva, in July 2016.
“We are on that line, it’s just a matter of them convening it,” Brig-Gen Kalouniwai said.
“The chief of Navy has to convene the court martial. We have to fill in the relevant documents. I think just because we are quite busy with the navy recruitment and all this, that we haven’t done it.”
Brig-Gen Kalouniwai earlier told this newspaper the RFMF was working on exhausting all its legal framework before deciding on actions that could be taken against these officers.
Meanwhile, Brig-Gen Kalouniwai said he could not comment on plans to salvage the naval ship.
