Rewa wins opener

TEN men Rewa defeated Nadroga 1-0 at the Courts Inter-District Championship at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.
After a scoreless first half, the 2010 champions scored in the 59th through a penalty from Simione Maikali.
Former Lautoka rep Jonetani Kaloutani playing for Rewa saw the red card following a crude challenge on a Nadroga’s Krishneel Dutt towards the end of the match.
The Stallions failed to take advantage after Kaloutani’s demise.
Finance Pacific-sponsored Nadroga coach Joseph Nitya Nand said Rewa had too much experience.
Nand said they gave a break to some new boys to prepare them for the next season.
“The players need to have a good mind-set and get the basics right,” he said.
“We have to sort things out urgently because we had only three days of training. But I think we will be able to iron things out.
“At the end of the day the team that scores wins the game so we have to survive in the tournament.”
Mikaele Rayasi Waqanicakau, Joeli Navalawa, Don Diven Raj and Iliesa Qereqeretabua made their debut for Nadroga.
Rewa coach Marika Rodu said the uneven ground surface made it hard to play their structured game.
Rodu said they had to settle faster in the remaining pool matches.
“The ground was very hard so the ball was bouncing everywhere,” he said.
“There are many things to work on and we have to settle faster next week.
“We have to improve our defence and mid-field. The boys missed a few chances upfront which would have got the game in the bag early.
“We received a few yellow cards and a red card so we need to be careful of the discipline.”
On Thursday at the ANZ Stadium, Nadroga will face defending champions Ba at 1pm while Rewa will play Lautoka at 5.30pm.
