REWA Rugby Union will have a new club competition winner this year.

Village teams Naqarani and Tacilevu will play in next week’s final after the semi-finals at Burebasaga ground yesterday.

Twenty-two teams competed in the year-long club competition.

Naqarani reached the final after beating Naduku 24-17 while Tacilevu ousted defending champion Lomainasau in the second semi-final 23-18.

The do or die outings for the semi-finalists saw a rare picture of Fijian rugby where a 54-year-old father Tevita Dere, a forward played alongside his two sons Apenisa and Tevita Jr for the Tacilevu team.

In the semi-final between Naduku and Naqarani, two brothers played against each other while they represented each side. Union secretary Petero Kaveni said the intensity and excitement of the competition built the morale among players and lifted the standard of weekly games.

“A major impact to the competition was the results scored by our Rewa team in the Skipper Cup competition where we maintained our positions in the major union for the 2019 season,” Kaveni said.

“The standard of club games has improved and I thank the supporters and fans for turning up in numbers and supporting their teams during the season.”

Meanwhile, the Tacilevu team wrested the Vanua Trophy from Vunitavola in the challenge division.
