Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali attributed the recent spate of violent brawls to a manifestation of disenfranchised youth.

She said young people felt let down by society through a lack of guidance and leadership – whether it was traditional, religious or political.

“The utter lack of respect shown in Parliament and the adversarial approach to political leadership is not a good example for young people,” Ms Ali said.

“The youth are learning and we have stopped the practice of talanoa and consensus.

“We need to start using this to address issues of concern.”

She said community policing combined with good parenting, guardianship, and leaders could set positive examples for the younger generation.

Ms Ali said policing needed to be improved in relevant areas for Fijians rather than following the agenda of donors.

“Government policies must also be effective for the youth and there should be more resources towards effective and needs-based youth development.

“The people who sit behind the curtain and whisper to these youths to commit these crimes on their behalf must also be brought to justice.

“Rule of law is a given in any democracy and must be respected. Everybody has the right to live peacefully in their neighbourhood, whether it is in Raiwai, Namadi or Nadera,” Ms Ali said.

“Police response times must also be the same whether you live in Raiwai or Namadi.”
