Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says the return of rural allowance for civil servants may entice nurses to take up postings in rural and maritime Fiji.

He said this in response to a query from a district representative at the Ba Provincial Council meeting on the vacant health centres in the Yasawa Group.

“In the budget announced by the A-G which we hope will be passed next week by Government, he announced the return of rural allowance for civil servants and this is specifically for our staff nurses,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“Hopefully this will entice them to take up rural postings.

“There’s also some maintenance works that need to be done in the two health centres in Teci and Yasawa-i-rara and we will post nurses there once works are done.”

Dr Waqainabete said the ministry no longer faced issues of vacant health centres in rural and maritime areas.

He said they now had over 1000 doctors and over 3400 nurses to cater for health care needs of Fijians.
