GOVERNMENT has formalised the retirement age to 60 through the gazetting of the Civil Service (General) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 on January 21.

The gazette notice was authorised by the Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and the chairperson of the Public Service Commission Luke Rokovada.

It stated: “A permanent secretary may, with the agreement of the minister responsible for the ministry, permanently employ a person to perform duties in the civil service until such time the person resigns, retires or is otherwise terminated.

“The continuation of employment of a person employed under sub-regulation (1) is subject to the performance of the person in accordance with any performance management system guideline issued by the permanent secretary.”

The Civil Service (General) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 also sets the probation period of a civil service appointee to six months, compared with the previous practice of probation that was set in proportion to the term of contract.

The Civil Service (General) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 also clarified and formalised the re-employment after retirement stating it can be done when “there are clear plans in place to phase out the retention of the employee over a period not exceeding one year”.
