PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has this week ordered the Water Authority of Fiji to connect water meters for 16 households at Naria Settlement, Rakiraki.
The PM gave the directive after hearing the concerns of residents during a talanoa session on Wednesday.
Naria district advisory councillor Ajeet Sharma said the families lived on expired crown leases.
“Every time we try and get our water meters connected to our homes we are asked to provide our proof of ownership which is our crown land leases,” he said.
“And we can’t do that because we are still waiting for our renewals to be approved.
“I have been trying for the past two years to get this issue sorted, but nothing has been done about our concerns.
“Some of our leases have expired for more than 10 years.
“We’ve applied for the renewals and even paid for the application, but still nothing has been done.
According to Lands Department officials present at the meeting, residents could still receive water supply on expired land leases.
Ra provincial administrator Kelepi Kubunameca said residents did not have a proper water supply system and relied on carted water.
The PM urged the two departments to communicate to avoid future confusion.
