Resort proud of its barista of the year award winner

INTERCONTINENTAL Fiji Golf Resort & Spa’s resident coffee expert Hansini Gounder is still so surprised at winning the 2017 Piazza D’Oro Barista of the Year at the annual Moffat National Salon Culinaire competition on November 16, 2017.

Ms Gounder said the whole journey for her during the time had been nothing short of amazing – from competing with other established baristas from all over Fiji to the amount of personal training she had to get ready.

“I’m truly grateful to my family, friends and to my fellow colleagues at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa who have given me so much support along the way.

“We have a lot of coffee enthusiasts who need caffeine throughout the day, and it is my pleasure to provide that energy boost to soothe any coffee connoisseur. Together with the perfect cup of coffee, I believe that a smile and personality go a long way in determining true hospitality offered here on Natadola Bay,” said Ms Gounder.

A statement from the resort said Ms Gounder was a friendly face at Sanasana Restaurant and was well known for her high level of skill when brewing amazing gourmet coffee.

It said Ms Gounder had been satisfying the resort guests with her delicious coffee since 2012 and this award was testimony to her passion and dedication to the art of coffee-making.

Director of Dining & Entertainment at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa Craig Wood says: “I am continually amazed by the outstanding skill, knowledge and dedication displayed by Hansini and our entire dining experience service team at the resort.

“We endeavour daily to deliver exceptional experiences to our guests and credit our achievements to the tireless hard work of our colleagues, whose renowned Fijian hospitality continues to mark and showcase InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa as a premium luxury destination in Fiji to the rest of the world.”

Qualifying rounds for the 2017 Piazza D’Oro Barista of the Year began in early August with participants from the Coral Coast region competing in various challenges.

Finalists were then invited to showcase their barista skills at the finals held at the Warwick Fiji Resort.

To win, Ms Gounder had to demonstrate her skillset by preparing two flat whites, two espressos’ and two lattes of exceptional taste; and then clean her work station within a 20-minute timeframe.
