Residents seek clarification

SINCE being declared a town in 2010, Rakiraki residents have been seeking clarification on certain aspects of the Local Government Act.
These queries are linked to issues such as the payment of rates and keeping livestock within the municipal boundary.
Special administrator Ralulu Cirikiyasawa said many residents were farmers and this required them to keep livestock on their property.
“The legislation says livestock or animals cannot be kept inside the town boundary, and this is a real dilemma because these farmers, who have now become ratepayers, need animals for their livelihood,” Mr Cirikiyasawa said.
“It is through the use of these animals that they are able to pay things like town rates and fees and charges.”
Minister for Local Government Parveen Kumar Bala said a proper study of how people were affected was needed.
