KASHMIR residents affected by a new housing development will know the outcome of an inquiry conducted by the Department of Environment this week.

Ministry of Waterways and Environment permanent secretary Joshua Wycliffe said a final recommendation would soon be made known.

“The department has looked into this and have acted upon the concerns raised,” he said.

“The officers from the West have confirmed site visits and examining the issues raised against the conditions set in the EIA. The department is enquiring further into the matter and is expected to make a final recommendation (including technical) by close of business today (yesterday).”

Mr Wycliffe said more action could be undertaken if further inquiries were made by the Environment Department.

“Should additional conditions be required to protect the surrounding communities from erosion, the department will surely and immediately act upon it.”

He said more information would be released once the issue was resolved.

Issues regarding the land works were raised with the Housing Authority and the Lautoka City Council by concerned residents from 2018.

Residents were concerned about the soil run-off that would spill into nearby homes during periods of heavy rain.
