Residents brave strong currents

THREE Irish crossings in Buabua, Lautoka were washed away on Monday.

A team from this newspaper watched as residents tried to cross the flooded waterway because they wanted to go home.

Buabua resident Raj Kumar said the main bridge was damaged during last week’s heavy rain.

“There are two more bridges further inland that are also damaged,” he said.

“A team from the Fiji Roads Authority came and inspected the bridge but they couldn’t do much because of the bad weather.

“People have been walking through the rivers for the past week.”

In its situation report yesterday, the Fiji Roads Authority lists the damaged crossings in Buabua.

Forty-six roads were closed in the Western Division on Monday because of the heavy rain.
