When Government announced its $90 unemployment cash assistance scheme for the COVID-19 containment areas last week, Anisha Alia ensured she met all requirements so her family could be assisted.

The Tomuka, Lautoka resident was among hundreds of successful Lautoka residents who braved the heat yesterday to withdraw their cash from Vodafone’s M-PAiSA service.

“We struggle a lot, we can see other families struggling as well in our area, and this is why I applied to be assisted because I have small children,” Ms Alia said.

“We are managing slowly with our leftover and we got assistance recently as part of the Muslim fasting month which lasted us a week.

“This cash assistance will assist us in buying basic food items we need at home which can last us before my husband goes back to work.”

Ms Alia said her husband had not worked since the Lautoka lockdown three weeks ago and they were struggling to make ends meet.

They were hopeful things would go back to normal soon for the sake of their two children, aged two years and two months.
