Females make up 34 per cent of the labour force whereas males represented 66 per cent.

This was shared by Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) team leader gender and transitional justice program Laisa Bulatale during the launch of the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) research report “Beyond 33 per cent: The Economic Empowerment of Fiji Women and Girls” on Wednesday.

The research was done with the assistance of Prof Wadan Narsey, We Rise Coalition funded by the Australian government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The report was compiled with analysis from the Employment and Unemployment Surveys done by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, Fiji National Provident Fund statistics (various years) and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service statistics on taxpayers (2017 and 2018).

According to the report about 98 per cent females are unpaid full-time household workers, commonly referred to as ‘housewives’.

“Females in aggregate did 53.4 per cent of all work, by hours, in 2015-2016,” the report stated.

“The shares of total work done by female (53.4 per cent) has remained around the same for the previous twelve years, according to all three EUS, 2004-2005, 2010-2011 and 2015-2016.

“That done by males has remained the same at around 47 per cent.”
