Relief gift

FIJI’S experience of torrential rainfall within a very short period of time is causing huge devastation, says Minister for National Disaster Management and Meteorological Service, Inia Seruiratu.

Mr Seruiratu highlighted this at a handover of equipment for Tropical Cyclone Josie relief from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China on Friday.

He said TC Josie, showed that climate change was greatly affecting us.

“The most recent one as a result of TDF12 that also led to TC Josie is a perfect example of what we have been saying all along that the changing weather pattern and climate change is seriously affecting us here in vulnerable small island states,” Mr Seruiratu said.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Qian Bo said China would continue to show its support by being a development partner.

“The message I want to send is that China has always been a steadfast and reliable development partner for Fiji,” Mr Qian said.

“This has been tested true in the past and I am sure this will continue to be tested in the future.”

The embassy gave $40,000 worth of relief equipment to the ministry which included chainsaws, portable water pumps, water hoses and rescue ropes.
