TRANSPORT is the fastest growing emitting sector yet decarbonisation has lagged behind other energy sectors.
This was one of the issues that were discussed at the Pacific Islands Transport Forum that started at the University of the South Pacific Japan-Pacific ICT Centre today.
The three-day forum is expected to provide participants with a platform to discuss regional transport issues, and find ways and strategies to effectively deal with the challenges facing the regional transportation sector.
Pacific Community’s Maritime Industry Energy Efficiency adviser Geoscience Energy and Maritime Division Dr Zullah Mohammed Asid said it was important to look at the different modes of transport and how they must respond to Pacific communities’ need.
“Each mode of transport faces various issues related to quality of service, frequency and profitability,” Dr Asid said.
The expo is also expected to up the tempo on awareness within the Pacific public and private sector on global technology options for low carbon/zero emission sea, land and air transport, including public transit, non-motorised and and private vehicle modes.
