DEFENDER Kavaia Rawaqa has engraved his name alongside the country’s best players after being named the 2018 Design Engineering Footballer of the Year during the Vodafone Fiji FA awards at the Sofitel Resort and Spa on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old Lautoka Blues and national rep gave credit to the Almighty God for receiving the top award and was humbled to join some of the country’s top players such as Radike Nawalu, Esala Masi, Alipate Driu, Ratu Veresa Toma, Josaia Bukalidi, Malakai Kanihewe, Salesh Bula Sami, Jone Vono Jr, Simione Tamanisau, Kamal Hassan and Dave Radregai who have won the award in past years.

Rawaqa said he didn’t expect to win the award after being nominated alongside Ba’s Abbu Zahid and Nadi’s Rusiate Mateirerega.

“I want to thank the Almighty for this award because I didn’t expect to win it,” he said.

“I also thank my wife Kinisimere for being there for me throughout my career especially the encouraging words and never ending support.

“Sheer hard work, sacrifices and dedication are the key elements allowing me to win this award.”

The Macuata footballer also thanked the Lautoka football family for the support throughout the season.

“I thank our president Abdul Kadar and his family, likewise all the Lautoka soccer family for winning this award.

“This award is for the team and I believe it will inspire me to work really hard.” Rawaqa’s teammate Dave Radregai won the award last year.
